This poster explains Isaiah Berlin’s concept of positive and negative liberty and the rise of these ideas in political thought during the twentieth century.

This game was developed to justify the mathematical equations of game theory used by the R.A.N.D. Corporation, the hypothesis posed was that it will always benefit the individual to betray. During the past fifty years these concepts have gradually influenced politicians internationally. 

The Game
Two suspects A and B are arrested and separated by the police and are offered a deal.
If, Prisoner A stays silent & Prisoner B stays silent. Each serves six months.
If, Prisoner A betrays & Prisoner B stays silent. Prisoner A goes free. Prisoner B serves ten years.
The outcome is that it will always benfit the individual to betray.

The grave of Philip Larkin lies close to my family home and over a two week period I produced a photographic study related to his poem ‘The Importance of Elsewhere’ which is presented in the form of a small book.

The abstract composition produced by this poster/ invitation design became the central concept for all of the publicity for the Leeds Met. Arts Festival 2008. The design of the poster/invitation allowed each department to create their own version, through folding, revealing four key words identifying the different processes required to achieve their outcome. When the poster/invitation was completely opened the main image displayed fragments of text related to each department creating an abstract composition.

         A project to promote West Yorkshire Playhouse. The underlying concept was that theatre is three dimensional compared with film which is two dimensional. Included are mock-ups of how the campaign could be transfered to billboards.

‘The Idea of Freedom’ was the central concept informing my third year work. This research provided the material to produce a book based largely on the work of Isaiah Berlin using paintings of the period to illustrate the text.

   A collaborative project for an exhibition undertaken to explore the hypothesis that the character of a person could be identified by examining the sole of their shoes.

‘Opera North’ was seeking to produce posters which would encourage young people to go to their production of Pinnochio. My response was to use simple text which was deliberately subversive in an effort to appeal to that audience.
